Love Letter 28 – Prize Line

Love Letter 28 – Prize Line

I attempt to drown out the clomp, clomp, clomp of the heavy-footed occupants above by amping up dance tunes by The Brothers Macklovitch as I roll around the media room, bopping to the beat on my anti-burst, brilliant blue exercise ball. It takes only moments before I bound into Berkeley, California 1960 with Mom’s fabulous handwritten pages of Love Letter 28:

Apt 102 2331 Blake
Berkeley, California

Oct 15/60 2 A.M.

Hi Lover!
Well dear to-nite I will write you a more organized letter – guess I was a little tired last nite when I wrote.
How is everything in Winnipeg? – can you believe that in a week’s time I’ll be w/ you, dear – and when you receive my letter it will only be about 5 days.
I can hardly wait to just sit and talk? (prize line) and go for a wee drive.
Had a lousy day of sleep to-day. Didn’t get to bed until 11 A.M. and had multi interferences –
Bobby and Mary Jo came over for breakfast – Oh honey you should have seen Bobby – her Mike proposed to her last nite and she was no where near work – I had ‘goose pimples’ just listening to her – hardly excited & thinking about our initial courting days – Zowie, sounds like we’re ancient doesn’t it.
She met her mother-in-law to-be a couple of weeks ago – hardly nervous – does that sound like me?!!
Anyhow the 3 of us sat and gabbed at our place then I cleaned the apartment, had a bath then to bed.
Then the interferences –
About 3 different groups of people came in w/ the manager to see the apartment – you’d think I was advertising for Sealy mattresses or something as such –
Then a couple of callers who buzzed our apartment for the manager – and then had 3 phone calls – by this time had had 2 1/1 hours sleep.
So was beat – then decided to lie around and at 6 o’clock fell asleep until after 10 o’clock – confusing sleep.
Then of course get all excited thinking about coming home and seeing you.
Anyhow I survived quite well surprisingly enough.
So had scant fresh air to-day and what a beautiful day – evidently was 75 degrees above and I stayed in our sunless bedroom.
Should get the tickets tomorrow and will get all arranged, dear.
United Air Lines called again to-day – so am sure all will be well.
Next time I’m driving back w/ you, dear.
Must get my sleep first thing in the morning so get some shopping done tomorrow – must invest in a new pair of nurses shoes for sure and a few other articles.
Nothing much happened since I wrote to you last nite.
Will give you the final details re: the flight in my next letter, honey.
Well here it is nearly 3 A.M. and what a night – have had multi signal lites and everyone is nauseated and “heaving their toe nails up.”
Well dear will close now – I love you more than anything – see you very soon now.
Bye –
Yours Always,
Bette xxxxxxxx (soon they’ll be real ones – Zowie)
Chopp – Chopp

Multiple sleep interferences will take on a whole new meaning in the days to come Mom. You know the ones: when you and your lover are exchanging ‘real’ smooches when no one’s looking or during wee autumn drives in the fogged up green hornet or – the prize line of all – while simply sitting around and talking, question mark?!
Music to young lover’s ears everywhere.

You’ve got to give love to get some
