Love Letter 76 – Our Necking Break On #10
Love Letter 76 – Our Necking Break On #10
The curious mixed weather patterns of ice pellets, raindrops and brilliant blue skies mimic my mixed emotions as I reach for what will be the last of my Mom’s treasured collection of love letters to Dad – on this fabulous Father’s Day weekend, no less.
The occasion calls for a glass of smooth Okanagan Pinot and the soothing sound of Nat King Cole as I tentatively and tenderly open the Feb 13, 1961 postmarked envelope revealing A Loving Valentine for my Sweetheart! Carlton card embracing four delicately handwritten pages of Mom’s Love Letter 76:
Sunday 11 p.m.
Hi Honey!
Well my love only 5 more days till we’re married; 3 more days till I’m w/ you; 2 more letters to write.
How many times thru’ our courtship have we been counting days, hours, etc. And after we’re married no doubt I’ll be counting days!?
It’s the funniest thing right now the past couple weeks were so frustrating & exciting and this week our wedding is so near I’m numb and haven’t a worry in the world – only that you’ll make it here alright w/ this damn snow (but the #10 road is always cleared promptly).
Our home seems to be getting more cluttered up as the days proceed – hope you won’t mind our messy abode.
Gifts all over. Must pack more to-morrow nite.
Honey we got a beautiful black handled carving set w/ 6 matching steak knives from Ginny.
Also getting a bed spread & pillows from people in Wpg. We got a steam iron now.
I’ll just have to show you everything as I never know what we got, when & probably have repeated myself a dozen times.
Oh dear I love you so much. We’ve been apart far too long!! I miss you so and I’m so excited about seeing you Thursday nite – hope I’m not too numb to recognize you.
At times I have so many things going around in my head at once I barely can remember my name.
By the by, dear have got some thank you notes written & have so much to do after.
Man, when will we ever get settled!?
Only things I can think of reminding you to bring dear are: You
wedding ring
blood report
serviettes
– what did I forget?
Everything is going along fairly well – start a real dash tomorrow —
Be glad when Wed comes & am finished work.
Oh honey you should see how crazy everyone is getting – hardly bugging me – can hardly wait for you to get some of it.
Everyone is really conniving & planning an attempt – raid on our hotel room.
The only people knowing of our honeymoon nite planning are Uncle Frank, Aunt Bertha, Mom & I (can’t trust a soul around here).
Tested punch last nite at Curly’s – real good stuff.
Susan & the kids are better now (her dress looks darling on her).
Gran not too good, dear. Her legs very poor – and knees bad. In bed most of the time (at Aunt Bertha’s still) – what a time to get sick.
Oh – wish you were here — soon thank gosh!
You sure can “pub it” dear – wish your trip all the best.
Maybe we can dash you in Thurs nite or Fri afternoon – exhibit our famous lounge.
Rehearsal Fri @ 7:30 pm.
Do I ever hope Dianne & John drive so they can join us Fri @ Aunt Bertha’s.
Well my love will close now as must get my sleep so I’ll be fresh & alert for “my nite.”
Please be careful on the trip up here — wish I could be w/ you, but how many details would there be then (remember our necking break on No #10 between The Pas & here — that’s us!).
Nite now.
Soon we’ll be together.
All my Love!
Yours always,
Bette

Chopp – Chopp!!
P.S. One more short note before you leave — probably tomorrow nite
I Love You
Ah Mom, you’re far from numb – you’re simply over the moon as months have become weeks, weeks have become days and now, hours will become minutes, minutes will become seconds and then poof – just like that, you’ll be husband & wife!
And trust me, you’ll never forget your name! Just as you’ll never forget your necking break on #10 between The Pas and Flin Flon . . . I knew I felt a touch of magic each time I passed a particular turnoff on highway #10! Love you both, always.
Love was made for me and you

Honey,
You felt magic when passing that intersection? Me tooooo. lol
Congratulations on your union Bette & Bryan….your daughter is beautiful.
There’s certainly touches of magic around particular bends, intersections and even forks in the road – love it!! Tjxxx
