Love Letter 60 – Rev. Sargent

Love Letter 60 – Rev. Sargent

Silly seagulls glide effortlessly across the silent, still morning landscape . . . a far cry from wheeling winds filling the darkened dusk during the wee hours of the southwestern city by the sea. I settle into the upholstered wingback chair in the northwest corner of the expansive suite, nearest the library, with a soothing cup of lemon ginger tea, Joni Mitchell’s soft ballads and Mom’s silvery account of January 7, 1961 in the continuing pages of Love Letter 60:

Here it is 5 pm Saturday and I have done very little work to-day — mainly because I only started w/ one doctor on duty and he went to curl in a bonspiel at 3:30 p.m.
So here I am dear, sitting at a doctor’s desk finishing your letter.
Think I better go over your 2 letters and answer any questions and tell you how everything is progressing:
1/ Walter will be taking movies at the wedding & at the reception dear.
After the actual wedding ceremony we’ll probably drive around about 10 mins then return to the church for pics since we’re not allowed to have any while the ceremony is on.
Also pics at the reception — toasts, speeches, cutting the cake, receiving our guests, etc. – you know dear.
Want any movies after we leave our reception — ha.
A bit punchy, honey.
2/ Have got the car arrangement up to par & will now work on making paper flowers – any spare time is used for this purpose.
3/ About the wedding gifts honey — what a job!
If only people would come up to me & say Bette, what do you need – we’ll spend $5, $10, or what have you – just mention the amount, it would be so much better.
You can give people suggestions, but never really know what you’re getting.
We are getting nice T.V. tables from Walter tho’ – I saw them in a catalogue he asked me to look at.
Sure wish we’d get a nice sun burst clock, perfect for our panelled wall, eh.
4/ No doubt by now you’ve heard from Doug — Denice mentioned that he’d written you last week. They sure are pleased, real glad I met them at Christmas, dear.
5/ Talked w/ Rev. Sargent re: the ceremony, etc and final plans made.
We can’t have our bans read as we had to sign a paper together w/ him – which of course we didn’t do so need a license – 24 hrs before our wedding – so if you run into any car trouble & you’re not sure you’ll get here by 6 o’clock Friday phone me & I’ll meet you 1/2-way.
Rev. Sargent mentioned nothing about any papers you’d have to show, baptismal papers, etc.
6/ If we get some gifts in Wpg. dear would really like a list just in case people duplicate them here – won’t write thank you notes until we get to our own home. (Wow does that sound great!)
7/ Received your cheque honey – thank you – it will cover the cost of the flowers am sure.
8/ Next letter I’ll tell you for sure if I need that crinoline, but for sure dear I’d need it before you come up.
I’d have to ask you to send it – as Mrs. McMartin (my seamstress) wants to see my entire gown w/ crinoline, etc – she is a true perfectionist – I’ll tell you for sure next time.
9/ Please read your list of invitations next week – I’m finished addressing mine now and do yours next week.
10/ Glad to hear you’re getting our thesis done – real soon I hope.
11/ Crystal is real nice, I’m sure you like it too.
12/ About the showers – inside-line not sure exactly, but can’t help overhearing some chattering about the house. Also what a situation? – a couple of people that might be attending the showers are not on the invitation list, but must leave it that way cause must draw the line somewhere.
So many people (majority have been patients) talk to me as if they have full intention of coming to our reception, but really don’t know them that well.
Maybe we should have eloped, eh?
But it’s fun.
13/ Pleased to hear about our bedroom suite – sure nice to save some of the money, dear – will be able to spend it on supplying our cupboards & frig w/ food.
14/ Are you leaving Wpg. Thurs. morning? – or after work Wed?
Will arrange the hotel reservations.
Have always had them anyhow.
When will the kids arrive Sat?
Good grief this is beginning to look like a thesis!
Hope you’re nearly finished our paper, much more, Lover?

Holy moly Mom – this love letter is beginning to resemble a wedding planning thesis . . . good thing Rev. Sargent doesn’t have access to all of the points on the pages?!
