Love Letter 55 – Midnite Church Service
Love Letter 55 – Midnite Church Service
Just breathe, I utter to myself while releasing the day’s exhaustion into the late afternoon sky and then, poof, an instant sense of gratitude washes over me like a soothing sunset shower amidst a vibrant multicoloured arch.
I’m easily entranced by the solo piano of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, and further captivated with the handwritten delights of Mom’s ensuing Love Letter 55, December, 1960:

Here it is 4pm – some delay.
Did wrap a few more gifts, but had a few visitors.
Eth came over for coffee & a cig break – then I went over to their place for an hour or so.
They’re trying to decide how to re-decorate their new wee home – need an engineer to estimate the cost of many items – cost of building an outside chimney, putting in a new stainless steel sink — of course you’ll know how all this is done.
Came home to finish your letter, dear and 4 of Don’s buddies (2 from school in Butte) are over here – playing records & singing songs – not much of a noise at all – nice to see them all back home again.
No definite plans re Christmas yet, just calling & meeting relatives which will be a treat.
We always go to midnite church service so we’ll again fill a whole pew no doubt.
Then we’re to call down to Curly & Joy’s – will tell you all when you’re here, dear.
Gee, I hope the roads will be pretty fair – everyone says they’re storm warnings for this week-end — sure hope not.
All you’ll need is your suit & warm clothes, eh.
Sunday – Christmas supper at Auntie Bertha’s (16 of us so far) usually quite a mad house.
By the way, honey don’t forget that box of clothes and your song book, okay.
What are the plans for New Year’s – dear?
I just might have to roar back Sunday A.M. Jan 1 – so talk was around the clinic (evidently we’re not getting Mon. a holiday) but we’ll greet the New Year properly.
A little more quiet now as the boys decided to go downstairs to Don’s room for some card games (gambling probably).
How’s everyone at your home?
Everyone fairly good here, but as usual Gran’s feet get pretty sore.
Hello from all.
Well dear w/ the mail being slower than usual have no idea when you’ll get this letter – but probably by Wed anyway.
I don’t think you’ll get any more if I send you one after Tues. so will be the last one I write.
Hardly wait to see you – in our humble abode.
Zona & Metro (couple from Dayton Valley) are coming up for the wedding – their home is here & they have a new son to show off here.
Well, dear will close now –
‘Till I’m with you!
All my love –
Yours always,
Bette

Chopp – Chopp!!
The Tapestry onion skin card reads:
Merry Christmas, Sweetheart
Life wouldn’t be complete for me
Without your love and you,
For everything I hope or plan
Or do or want to do
Is entered in the love we share,
And this just comes to say,
You’ll be my sweetheart always —
Forever and a day!
And faithfully, Mom signs off:
Yours always, dear
Love Bette xx
Whether scrunched along the pew during midnite church service or crammed around Nana Bertha’s dining room table for Christmas supper – they’re both sure to be ‘mad houses’ with the likes of our family, wouldn’t you agree Mom?!
