Love Letter 48 – Crazy Time
Love Letter 48 – Crazy Time
The usual haven of sweeping green coniferous extensions become a barrage of branches wielding soppy snow bombs along the haphazardly shovelled Kitsilano streets, forcing me to dart side to side like a pinball – a sharp contrast to the shaded comforts of feather-leaved palms along the dramatic lava rock terrain.
I dive back into Flin Flon, December 1960 with a calming cup of chamomile, a warming pair of woollen socks, the strumming sounds of IZ’s ukulele and the pacifying pages of Mom’s handwritten Love Letter 48:

Every time I read your letter and can hardly believe that everything is true – about furniture that will be ours – and your Mom helping us out so much.
We are a bit spoilt I must say.
Listen dear if you could possibly give me an idea of the no. of invitations & announcements real soon I’m going to order them in the next couple of weeks.
I’m going to inquire re: cost, etc of the invitations tomorrow – w/ Christmas and all we have to get them on time.
So very much all around Christmas – and then w/ me in Wpg. for a week will get nothing done at home —
So far done fairly well dear:
Hall $25
Orchestra $8 per person – probably 3 fellows plus tip
Caterers – make all the sandwiches, etc – serve & clean up after – $70 app.
Church – $5 Vocalist
Minister
Cake – $10 decorating (Auntie Bertha is making it & refuses to take any money for ingredients – will have to get her something for herself after the wedding)
Liquor ??
Flowers ? Gown & Clothes
Invitations?
– It’s fun but wish you were here w/ me.
Every time I see someone in the clinic that I need for something I catch them there.
Only have my hour at noon to get anything done.
Like I say, time is going by –
Haven’t thought too seriously about anything for myself, yet, but no time.
– probably end up in Bermuda shorts as going away outfit — to the hotel.
Been planning the bridesmaid’s dresses tho’ so making some progress.
Next Wed. one of the nurses traded days off w/ me so will get to the dentist anyway – take an hour off duty and on Sat (day off) get all my Christmas errands done — only couple more gifts and wrapping paper, etc.
Then the following Wed. have a doctor’s appointment – great fun.
This is the time we would have such a crazy time together w/ plans, but, am not too sure how much we’d get done!
– Lots of loving tho’.
It’s worse than a doctor’s office here – 3 phone calls in the past 1/2 hour.
Evidently a town grater has been having its motor running for the past hour w/ no one in it — then some one else’s sewer has frozen up — and everything backs up their sink??
Well lover will close now.
I love you so very much dear –
Can hardly wait to be in your arms again!
Hello & Love from all.
Yours always,
Bette

Hmm, haven’t thought too seriously about anything for yourself Mom – might I remind you that you are the bride to be?! Well, there’s still time and you’ll figure it out. Nonetheless you and Dad will experience an exhilarating, crazy time together before, during and following your wedding celebration . . . when sporting your flashy, floral Bermuda shorts going away outfit?!
And the dreams that you dream of
Dreams really do come true
