Love Letter 66 – Behind Bars??
Love Letter 66 – Behind Bars??
On this relatively clear day I can see almost forever – squinting past blurred horizontal rooftops and barren deciduous treetops and landing my scope onto the shimmering tide pool blue Boundary Pass where Georgia Strait meets Haro Strait. My scenic seascape is interrupted by a neighbouring Salish seagull gliding freely in and out of my peripheral as if encouraging me to get on with my day or looking for handouts. I decide on the former and trade in my natural surroundings for the airy indoor sounds of Sade and the irresistible allure of Mom’s lengthy Love Letter 66, Flin Flon, 1961:
Monday 10 p.m.
Hi My Honey!
I love you so very much, Bryan!
Just have a little chat w/ you before I go to bed, dear – a little early, but won’t be there much before 11 p.m. & have been busy most of the evening.
Not too busy at work to-day, but didn’t have too much time to sit around either (any word of an office for you yet, dear – any secretary?)
When I got home after work had a nice surprise – the R.C.M.P. had taken Don to the police station for some questions and lo & behold they called here to see if I was home & that one of the officers was coming down to see me – (couldn’t quite imagine what I had done wrong).
They asked me where I was on the 15th of January and was my brother w/ me – luckily I remembered what I had done (the nite we all went over to Ethel’s for supper).
What they are doing is questioning most of the high school kids and finding out where everyone was – that’s the nite someone set fire to one of the high schools here — luckily was noticed by the caretaker & only part of a wall was destroyed — arson I say — great family this is.
Great fun if our family landed in jail for a couple of weeks — care to spend our wedding nite behind bars??
Did more sorting around here, attempting to decide where I can put some of my cottin’ pickin’ clothes – even did some sewing — lengthened a dress.
Intend to pack my trunk tomorrow nite then have a date w/ 3 nurses from the clinic for a beer and gab-joke session.
Got a letter from Marion to-day.
All seems to be real fine down south.
She mentioned that Ernie paid them a visit & seems quite happy – she’s sporting a new hairdo & losing weight (via Marion).
Marion mentioned Jim (Hardy’s baby) as a real member of the apartment house – makes the rounds to the different gatherings.
No mention what Kirk was doing for steady work, but that they had spent many evenings at young Republican meetings of which Kirk is president (of the Berkeley organization) and had met many very nice people.
Everyone is in pretty fair shape at home, dear but yours truly – I want & need you so much, honey.
I know I keep saying only 25 more days, but it still seems long for some reason. (Actually I think this will be the longest time we’ve been apart from each other, eh?).
It’s real cool here now too, no doubt the same in Wpg — about 28-30 degrees below all day & w/ a slight wind there’s no mistaking winter is still here.
Besides dashing around have been reading — read a whole pocketbook last nite & after work to-day (fiction – love story type – good character portrayal {spelling}).
By the way dear before this week-end could you please:
(no doubt when I start like that you know I have something else in mind).
Just peer into your attic & look over the box situation & see if you could attempt to find my white heels — not too fussy to purchase new ones now (maybe this summer).
Honey for sure they won’t be in the one long (rather narrow box) parcel as they are our pots & pans, but when you come to white heels you’ll no doubt find 2 – 3 pair. The ones I want are perfectly plain (no bows or such) white pointed toes w/ narrow high heels (I believe Chandlers will be written on the inside of one of them — Good Luck).
If you have any trouble at all forget about it, dear & just tell me soon & I’ll order some.
Hope I get dressed by 6 o’clock that Saturday.
Haven’t a clue where those shoes could be — looked in our basement.
Will close now — I love you Bryan.
Will close this after your letter tomorrow —
‘Nite dear XXXXXXXX
Mom! A wedding night behind bars?? That would certainly change things – no more last minute wedding guests, considerable cost savings and a quick fix to your clothing dilemma . . . not to mention one hell of a story?!
My love is wider than Victoria LakeTaller than the Empire State
