Love Letter 54 – Perfect Poem

Love Letter 54 – Perfect Poem

I’m excessively engrossed in the panoramic views of the snow-capped peaks of Mt Baker to the east, the glistening seaside shores of Semiahmoo resort to the south and the distant darkened rolling mounds of the Gulf Islands to the west that I miss the whistling kitchen kettle and my iPhone’s ‘by the seashore’ ringtone. In this moment, who really cares . . . I’m home – in my City by the Sea.
The Tragically Hip snaps me back into the zone seconds before Mom faithfully transports me into Flin Flon, Manitoba, December, 1960 with her enduring devotion captured within the folded foolscap pages comprising Love Letter 54:

Thurs. – 7:27 pm.
— home —

Hi Lover!
Another short note to my dear on my fancy stationery.
Never remember to purchase any writing paper.
Received your card to-day, dear, thanx – it was so very nice – perfect poem.
Can’t say too much has happened in the past 2 days.
Fairly busy at work and haven’t spent much time at home.
So many people want me to drop down for some Christmas cheer – wish there was more time.
Can hardly wait to see you, honey – only 9 more sleeps.
Hope the weather stays fairly nice – and it doesn’t blizzard all of a sudden.
Have just a couple more presents to get then get my gifts wrapped.
Want to get everything done before next week comes.
Down to Carole & Don’s for supper – their kids sure are cute – played w/ them until I was fatigued.
Some of the university kids are coming home this week-end so it will be more like home again.
The hospital staff is having their Christmas supper & party & I’ve been invited to attend the party after — meeting Mom & Eth in about 20 minutes.
You know me, I never get ready until the last minute.
How’s everyone in Wpg?
Will be there in less than 2 weeks – hope I get everything bought & done that I’d like to – do you realize there are only 8 Saturdays left after this week-end.
Should get our invitations next week – about 26.00 dollars – not too bad — haven’t ordered any napkins yet (can order them from the local drugstore here).
Everyone fairly good at home – Gran has her pretty bad days, but always fairly cheery.
I miss you so — every time I hear one of the kids at the clinic mention that their boyfriend is coming home this week-end I get so excited knowing I’ll be w/ you in a week.
Have about 5 things to do in my hour break tomorrow so probably won’t make it home.
Will get ready now to go out & finish this in an hour or so.
I love you so very much, Bryan!

I’m convinced you could write on an oil-stained popcorn bucket from Big Island’s Drive-In and Dad wouldn’t give a hoot . . .  just as I’m sure you’re itching to open whatever arrives in the post from your devoted lover – a cleverly crafted Carlton card, a Peanuts comic strip or the perfect poem!

Don’t tell me what the poets are doing
