Love Letter 49 – Joe College

Love Letter 49 – Joe College

The early afternoon’s mixed weather conditions of perpetual raindrops, pelting hail pellets and teasing tastes of sunlight reside me to the fact that my time will be better spent settled indoors curled up with a good read. I remain in my snug sleepers, slip into my fuzzy slippers, listen to the lyrics of Elvis Costello and warm to the continuing handwritten pages of Mom’s Love Letter 49, December, 1960:

Home now!
Joyce came in at 11 pm & we sat & chatted, drank coffee & had a cigarette so am in a better mood.
Wish you were here honey – I miss you so.
Bombers F.F. lost their hockey game to-nite 4-3 (close game so they say) – got to keep up w/ the northern sports.
By the way how is my curler doing?
Also, after to-day (Sat) there are only 10 Saturdays left before our wedding and only 2 left before I see you again.
Now I’ll write a proper page & be cheery!
How is everyone in Wpg?
Say hello to all please!
Received your slides to-day (Fri), but no letter, guess I’ll get it in about 12 hours – boy do I need a letter too.
Merv – one of our friendly druggist friends said best I send you the wee enclosed card – so here it is!
Everyone is pretty fair at 18 Lake dear – Brother Don needs glasses tho’ – so after 2 weeks he’ll be sporting dark rimmed ones – hardly Joe College – typical Yankee I figure.
How are Grandma & Grandpa – say hello for me, please.
I can hardly wait to have your arms around me – I love you so, honey!
Hear any more from the American Engineer’s Assoc?
Will close now –
Off to bed alone– Who does this sound like?
I’ll dream about you, dear – twins maybe?!
Love You so much
Yours always,

Chopp-Chopp!!

Mom’s ‘wee enclosed card’ reads:
Remember me?
Height 5’9” Weight 143
Bust 36 Waist 27 Hips 39
Birthday April 27
Anniversary Feb 18
Perfume CHANEL No. 5

Ah yes, late night chinwags over coffee and a cigarette may help remedy sudden surly spirits but we both know what will relieve your weekend loneliness forever Mom – the equation is simple math and the answer includes a few less lonely Saturdays . . . hardly something Joe College could calculate!

I’m giving you a longing look
Everyday I write the book
