Love Letter 39 – F.F. Bombers

Love Letter 39 – F.F. Bombers

The first ‘hot stretch’ reaches southern B.C. on the eve of game 5 of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Family, friends and colleagues litter street and beachfront patios exchanging enthusiastic worldviews while sharing exploding seafood towers and brimming charcuterie boards. Chrissie Hynde blares in my ears like an anthem as I willfully retreat into a distant time within the handwritten pages of Mom’s Love Letter 39:

Variety – Every letter a surprise. I Love You!!

Hi Honey!
More fancy stationery, but here I am w/ a few spare minutes and would like nothing better than to have a chat w/ my love.
Was it ever wonderful to talk w/ you last nite – so nice and clear that it seemed we were in the same city – no such luck. Could have chatted for hours just telling you how much I love you, dear.
After you read my letter you’ll find it just a review of our telephone conversation.
All Mom could say after the phone call is “what a lovely voice – oh what a voice” – she compared your voice, honey with that of Clarke Gable’s and that in her books is of real high esteem, but she thinks the world of her son-to-be, anyhow.
After talking w/ you went to the hockey game w/ Mr. Cowie (Carole’s father) and Carole – good game – we won 5-4.
F.F. Bombers are a real young new team this year – I really get enthusiastic and usually end up pounding the person sitting next to me.
Mr. Cowie said he will be happy to propose the toast to the bride – are you ready w/ a reply, dear? (can just imagine).
The only thing being the men’s curling bonspiel is on at that time – so he might have to run in between ends.
Also got the photographer.
Now the orchestra and I will feel much better.
Out for coffee after the hockey game then talked and argued w/ brother Don until 12 o’clock – then to bed.
Slept until nearly 8:30 and off to work at 9 A.M. – man this is the life to lead – real lazy type – no responsibilities until after Feb 18/61 – only 3 months & 6 days – time seems to be going somewhere.
Worked w/ Dr. Premachuk this A.M. & will be all day.
Keeps saying that they’ll probably send you up to Churchill since you work w/ Man. Government – they sure keep teasing me around this place, but enjoy being able to brag about my love.
Have a busy schedule for this afternoon, but Saturdays are usually quite hellish.
Will probably be off to the hockey game again to-nite as Don Wright is not using his ticket. He is feeling some better, can walk fairly good, but 2 more weeks at home.
Everyone is fairly good at our place, dear.
Guess I’m the sickest – I miss you so.
So many times, I think how wonderful it would be to just have you sitting at home when I get there at 6 o’clock.
Actually don’t mind this work too much as long as it doesn’t get too confusing – you know what clinics are like – there are always about a dozen extra people that think they can just run into the clinic and see a doctor anytime.
Met a Mr. Johnson who lives at Cranberry Portage and who is a brother to a classmate’s husband – small world.
So we had a lengthy chat about Winnipeg General .
Haven’t had my mind on my work too much to-day as I keep thinking of our phone call – great, just great –
I love you so very much, Bryan and am anxious to make you happy after we’re married.
Hope the weather stays nice around the 23rd of next month.
It’s gorgeous here to-day – nice and warm & just a little snow falling.
Keep thinking about seeing you next month – if you do make 1/2 decent time dear you could easily come right up to F.F. Saturday a.m. and I could visit w/ you from 1-2 pm – and you could sleep at home – will see – guess I’m just anxious to see you, dear.
Church tomorrow morning then a quiet Sunday.
Hope you worked hard on your thesis, dear – please get it finished real soon!
Say hello to everyone for me please. Anxious to spend an evening w/ Grandpa & Grandma, too – enjoy them so much.
We’ll have to have them over to our home for supper now & then (hope their favourite dish is easy to cook).
Well dear will leave the letter now as it is time for my lunch hour – and finish this to-nite before the game.

You F. F. Bombers fanatics are quite a crew, Mom – donning team jerseys, cheering at the top of your lungs and enthusiastically pounding neighbouring fans. Between your romantic wrestling bouts with Dad and attending gripping hockey games together, you may have some explaining to do about being black and blue?!

Talk to me darlin’ with a message of love
