Love Letter 39 – Flower Girl
Love Letter 39 – Flower Girl
A cascade of collectible cars cruise along the 1.6 kilometre White Rock strip from East Beach to West Beach as perpetual patio patrons bake under Sunday’s scorching sun’s rays. A mix of music genres escape convertible speakers only to be dispersed into the circulating Salish Sea air. I collapse onto the partially shaded pillowed beach bench under the Dolce Gelato awning and reenter my own sweet summer vibe with the sounds of No Doubt, the sensations of vanilla bean and the otherworldliness of the continuing pages of Mom’s Love Letter 39, November, 1960:

Sunday – 6 pm
Here I am to finish your letter, dear.
Was real busy on Saturday and never got off & home until 6:30.
Just had time to eat and wash dishes – over to Bud & Ethel’s for a quick drink (rum, yet).
We lost 2-1, but really enjoy hockey – enthusiastic fan.
Out for coffee w/ Mom, Bud, Ethel, Jim and I – home.
Looked over Brides’ books until nearly 1 A.M.
Up for church this morning then what a mess.
Mom & I cleaned trunks, suitcases and boxes until after 4 o’clock.
What an array of articles.
Decided to leave quite a bit of clothes here – you should just see the amount of stuff around here.
Have sheets, towels, pillow cases, etc. etc. and our records.
We may have everything to make up the bed dear – I mean sheets, pillow cases and all – need to buy a couple pillows tho –
Have sorted clothes, etc. and threw out over 4 shoe boxes of letters, cards and souvenirs of training and trips – just glad to get rid of a lot of the stuff.
It seems I saved everything I saw.
Ate the birds Don had shot for supper – good.
Gee, honey I miss you so!!
The week-end always seem to be worse, and am lonely every day.
Besides being fairly busy to-day had cute company.
Susan (my 3 yr. old godchild) has been w/ me every min.
Keeps practicing for the flower girl and keeps saying – Bette’s getting married to Bryan – sings it continually.
Don’t know how brave she’ll be when she sees you.
The wee notes enclosed are from her – she’s so cute – was only going to send you one of them, but she saw the others and asked, didn’t I want to send all her letters to you – guess they must all tell you how much I love you.
Also the Hardy’s announcement.
And a snap of a familiar spot! Our bar.
Well dear have promised Susan that we will go uptown for a couple of funny books and mail your letter – so will close now and get her dressed.
She has been so good all day.
I love you so very much dear – and wish you were here w/ me, but soon we’ll be together only a little over a month.
Hello to all.
Love,
Yours Always,
Bette xxxxx
Chopp–Chopp!!
Tucked within Mom’s loving handwritten pages are four mini memo pages of a thrilled toddler’s scribbles: To Bryan Love Susan and a postcard of the Cascade Hotel in Banff with the reverse reading: Bryan Recognize this place!
Appears you may have competition in the love letter writing department Mom – and 4 pages to boot?! And in a few short winter months you’ll be a couple of girls walking down the aisle to your admiring groom.
Oh, I’m just a girl,
Take a good look at me
