Love Letter 31 – February 18th

Love Letter 31 – February 18th

Mt. Seymour’s snow-capped peaks shimmer like polished glass with the rising sun – similar to the sheen off Whistler’s taunting, ice-covered slopes during my final ski run several seasons ago. I’ll stick to what I know best, and have more-or-less control over, like the speed and direction of navigating the narrow, intersecting streets of Kitsilano in my trusty Mini Cooper sport.
And today is my lucky day – finding a prime parking spot right outside 1969’s welcoming sidewalk. I dance along the path of neighbouring yews and blooming Japanese maple, making my way to and through the front door of the gleaming garden suite. Within minutes I’m seated at the circular teak dining table cradling a collection of Mom’s treasured love letters. Busty and the Bass provide the modern jazz hip hop bouncing off the Arctic white subway tile as I excitedly reach for Mom’s Love Letter 31, postmarked Nov 2, 1960:

18 Lake Street
Flin Flon, Manitoba

Nov. 1/60 11pm

Hello My Dear!

Oh how I miss you as I always do when we’re apart for awhile – I love you so.
Surprisingly enough the train ride wasn’t too bad, honey and I slept over 7 hours curled up in the seat – sure missed your kiss goodnight and your good morning kiss (no one to check to see how hot I was in the morning).
What a fantastic arrangement of people on the train – all of 3 females and all the rest were men on their way up north to Thompson Lake or such – dressed like real true trappers.
Couple of dandies sat across from me – they must have had nearly a whole case of beer w/ them as they drank it nearly all the way.
Met a couple of people from F.F. I knew – Bud Jobin one of them.
Had nearly a 2 hour stop over at The Pas which was no help, but arrived in F.F. around 10:30 A.M.
Actually was real nervous when got home – real excited and met so many people.
Everyone is so pleased of our plans re: February 18th, a little soon after Christmas but happy for us! – can hardly wait.
Start work tomorrow morning at 9 A.M. so will try and get back into the swing of things.
Met & conversed w/ many people today & more plans.
Rev. Sargent came over for one of his friendly visits so talked to me re: the wedding ceremony – also pleased.
Remember him fairly well now – he sure is scarred up badly from the war – burns or something like that.
Rather serious type, but rather nice.
Did you know if we have the wedding banns read 3 times in church (before which we have to sign an affidavit saying we consent to having them read) we do not have to obtain a
 wedding license – save $5.00.
Also talked about wedding procedure, etc. and Rev. Sargent asked (just asked) if I would like a partly English ceremony whereby the bride enters the church first w/ the man who is giving her away; followed by the bridesmaids – how does that sound? – different but nice!!?
Will tell you more about the ceremony in another letter.

Well Mom, it appears you’ve flown right over yours and Dad’s Winnipeg reunion and subsequent shenanigans, landing me directly into November in the Canadian Shield bedrock of Flin Flon. I suppose some moments are better left between two lovers, like altering dates for the altar – from April 29th to February 18th.
I know this had nothing to do with me!

Feel like a bird in the sky
