Love Letter 4 – Chopp-Chopp

Love Letter 4 – Chopp-Chopp

Just as quickly as the corporate screens power off and the final sip of chai leave my lips, the ‘smoothest of smooth jazz’ resonates to transform the room from workday grind to evening bliss – the bliss of returning to Mom’s hospital duty on September 8, 1960:

Mary Jo and Bobby just came by and they send their love also (they’re really 2 nuts and always have a wise remark).
Mary Jo is so pleased and happy now – the fellow she was so fond of who she thought was Catholic left his Church at the age of 8 – so all is well – and they are as busy as we were.
Just had some visitors and a wee coffee break – what a soft touch.
Hunter, Mary Jo and Bobby came down to visit us for coffee.
I tell you it’s ridiculous there are 3 R.N.s plus an aide on our floor to-nite – you roam back and forth from one floor to the next and visit.
I was doing fairly good on my eating honey – not too much rich food until to-nite – and another nurse brought cheese, crackers, cold ham and a chocolate cake – just a small party.
Mind you one of the kids is having her last shift to-nite so we’re all celebrating.
Also have started smoking more frequently, honey and even inhale occasionally.
We are off to the Flower Drum Song to-nite so will tell you about it in the next letter.
Be lonesome around #102 this week-end tho’  w/ the kids off to L.A. for 4 days.
Ernie said she’d purchase a spoon there for us – ‘member our first nite together.
Will close now-
Love you – love you –
Yours always,
Bette

** chopp–chopp
P.S. Snoopy misses you too dear
xxxx

The Peanuts comic strip, featuring Snoopy, makes its way, once again, into the envelope addressed to Bryan K. Johnston alongside the sentimental pages hidden within the ‘Hi Brows’ cartooned card:
Hello Honey.
I miss you!
Love Bette

Whether a spirited evening shift with nurse buddies, an afternoon java run down Telegraph Avenue with her girlies or a lonely weekend stint curled up on the sofa in suite #102 – Mom’s wishing for time to fly (to see and be with her love) is all but apparent . . . chopp-chopp!

How decadent…”I even inhaled a few times “. I love the innocence of the time.
