Love Letter 70 – 57B Wives Club

Love Letter 70 – 57B Wives Club

Deepak welcomes me into an abundant universe. I forget this every now and again as the rabbit hole is, at times, deep, dark and unyielding – and yet, with a stroke of magical awakening I’m channeled back into my ‘elegantly orchestrated’ universe of daylight, delight and infinite wonder.
Mariah and Brandy soulfully fill every inch of the panoramic window encased room as Mom fills my deepest recesses with her Love Letter 70, on a February, 1961 evening:

Thursday, 11:00 PM

Dearest!
Hello again, dear – now for a short chat before I retire.
Gee honey in 3 weeks we’ll have been married for nearly 5 days, how does that sound?
It’s getting hard to sit down & write now in that there’s so much I’d like to say & don’t know where to start.
Wish so very often that you were w/ me all the time. I need you so much now. I know I wouldn’t get anything done re: the wedding preparations, but oh to have you near me!
Feeling much better now, but have dull aches & pains, but have diagnosed my case as tension and tightened muscles – there is so much on my mind.
This would be the ideal time to have about 4 days off & fly over to some quiet, isolated spot to relax.
I’ll be a more healthier specimen, my love when you are here (2 weeks at this time).
Have no idea where we are going to put some of our gifts – maybe you’ll have to leave me here, dear? Ha!
Will try and itemize some of my multi thoughts.
Of course will start by telling you, I love you more than anything Bryan!
Enclosed is $20 from Auntie Bertha & Uncle Frank for our clock. Anxious to see it.
Harry & Sandy were up for supper last nite as it was my day off.
Did a fair amount of sleeping tho’ as feeling a bit miserable (maybe flu).
Babysat for about 5 hours only, had a wee snooze then dashed out for some coffee.
Barbara Brown (where I went for coffee – nurse buddie of mine here) had me over for coffee.
She, Bob & the baby (10 mos.) are leaving in 3 weeks for Newfoundland to live. Bob (chemical engineer – working in Research here) has a real good offer at Tilt Cove, Nfld – w/ house (3 bedrooms), furniture, fare, etc so accepted.
Really came up suddenly, but a wonderful opportunity for them.
They’re both from Kingston, Ont. (near there anyhow).
Then Mom & I went visiting last nite – surprise.
Some women (volunteer Firemen’s wives) had a linen shower. We got dish towels, pillow cases, towels, etc – real lovely – so must write thank you notes tomorrow.
Kept fairly busy at work to-day – then off to the show (The Sundowners) w/ Mom – good.
Had several calls awaiting me —
Friends from Cranberry Portage (run the Caribou Lodge there) just came back from Chicago (Sportsman Shows) and are staying until after our wedding – real good friends of mine so am pleased they will be here.
Received letters from friends of yours who will be unable to make the wedding – Mr & Mrs Kabe, Pat & Frank, etc etc.
Received Mr & Mrs MacDonald’s gift to-day — real lovely — silver entrée dish.
Was talking w/ Doug to-day (he was at the clinic).
He did real well curling in an out of town bonspiel – said he sent his measurements to you.
Saw Denice & Donna a couple days ago.
Had about a dozen things to say to you, but my mind is rather blank right now.
Am trying my gown on tomorrow nite – nearly complete now – hope you like it, dear.
Everyone is fairly good at home, dear. Gran had a touch of the flu for awhile too.
Hello to all!
Got a letter from one of my classmates in Wpg & I feel like an old married woman already — she said I’m invited to attend our 57B Wives Club meeting one Wed. (every month) in March – they thought I’d have a lot to chat about, California, etc. — said I’d have to ask my husband first, too – sure sounds different.
Must attempt to finish some packing around here tomorrow nite too, then paste shower cards in my scrapbook.
Well darling – hello from all of us!
I love you so very much.
I hope you don’t find my letters too confusing right now.
Good nite my love —
Yours always,
Bette XXXXXXXXX
Chopp – chopp
P.S. I won’t pretend I’m sleeping after your shower dear as long as it doesn’t take you as long as your bath –
Yours forever, dear.

Sheesh, you’re hardly an old married woman Mom!! Whether your attending a 57B Wives Club meeting, skipping at an out of town bonspiel or retreating for a couples weekend at Caribou Lodge – you’ll forever be Dad’s young lady love . . . this is for certain.

And I surrendered
As you took me in your arms
